Calling all Geography teachers!

• What is the National Geography Challenge?
  An exciting Educational Experience! The National Geography Challenge is sponsored by the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE). The program is operated under the auspices of the highly successful National Social Studies League. The Challenge is a national contest for 2nd grade through the 12th grade. Participation in national events of this type creates an enthusiasm for learning. Why not use the world in which we live as a vehicle to satisfy this thirst for knowledge? The National Geography Challenge will do just that while also providing a way to recognize individual and group achievement during the process. The Challenge consists on five Contests: Grades 2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-9, 10-12. The tests in the National Geography Challenge were developed by the NCGE. Appropriate awards will be presented at each level of involvement.

• When will the contest be held?
  The National Geography Challenge will be held at your school any day from April 2 through May 2, 2008.

• What types of questions can my students expect to see on the test?
  Your students will be participating with other students on the same grade level from schools all over the United States. All of the questions are in multiple-choice form. Grade 2 Contest contains 25 questions and requires 35 minutes; Grades 3-4 Contest contains 35 questions and requires 35 minutes; Grades 5-6 Contest contains 40 questions and requires 35 minutes; Grades 7-9 Contest and the Grades 10-12 Contest contain 50 questions and require 35 minutes each. The Challenges reflect the main themes of Geography, and are appropriate to each grade level.

• What other requirements are there to enter my class(es) in the Challenge?
  The entrance fee is $70 per school. This entitles your school to register one (1) team. The fee for each additional team is $45. You will receive two copies of the questions for each Contest you enter. Please duplicate as many copies as you need. Answer keys will be provided. There is no limit to the number of students who may participate. The students are to work independently on the questions. Each test is to be proctored and graded by the school. The top ten individual’s names and their scores are to be listed on score sheets provided. The sum of these top ten scores is the school’s team score. The score sheet is to be returned to the National Geography Challenge (envelope provided) where the results will be collated. All schools will receive a report of the results of the appropriate Contest. Each team will receive 11 awards – 1 Medal and 10 Certificates. Each additional team that your school registers entitles you to receive one additional set of awards. There are also individual and team awards on the national level.
